With Love to Musical Instruments The world holds a range of musical instruments. Most of them are said to have had their origins in western and central Asia. According to a book, it is no exaggeration to say that most musical instruments that transferred through the Silk Road originated in Persia in western Asia. It says that tracing back to the origin of the lute we are led to the Pipa (a Chinese lute) and the Oud (Balbat) from Persia. The Santur is also an Iranian instrument, and like a brother of an instrument in Baghdad, the Dulcimer. As it improved and transferred eastward, it became a Chinese zither, the Yangquin, and also, transferring to the west and improving it evolved into the piano. The Chinese flute is also a brother of the Nay (a vertical reed pipe) in Egypt and an Arabian pipe, the Barabarn is also a double reed instrument in Armenia and Wigle, and it was the origin of the Hichiriki (a Japanese court music instrument). Tracing these instruments back to their origins, silent breathing can be heard from every instrument, as they have been repeatedly improved, reformed and developed beyond the borders of the countries they came from. "Formed materials disappear some day." But in spite of this, musical instruments remain, and send wonderful sounds to the present. Feeling like creating music with love to musical instruments such as these, I again spun a globe. Then, a lonesome traveler advancing across a dry land or desert riding on a camel, the western wind over the Arabian Sea, Central Asian fields and the ripples of the ocean by a blue island... Such calm and grand or mysterious views came into my sight. "Asian Blossoms" was travel from the east to the west. "Road to OASIS" is a mental traveler full of sadness, thoughtfulness, heartrending sorrow, endless dreams, mystery and passion, and going from the west to the east. We say that each life is also a journey. One's pain and true thoughtfulness are learned through a variety of encounters and partings. We also say there are more events that are difficult than happy ones, but we can see that everybody has an oasis in their hearts as they pause for a moment in their lives before moving on, advancing with acceptance of all events... Although it may be far in the future, a light is surely shining. There is no night that has never been followed by a sunrise. I composed this album thinking about such things. To the Li-Hua Ensemble (the Erhu, Pipa, Yangqin and Guzeng) featured on the album "Asian Blossoms", I added various musical instruments and musicians for this album such as the Dulcimer, Santur , Saz, which is a Turkish instrument, a Chinese flute, a handmade Nay from Egypt, an Arabian pipe, the Barabarn, a Chinese instrument, the Guanzi, and the Shinobue from Japan, a harp, an oboe, a horn, strings, a piano, an electric acoustic guitar and a synthesizer. "Formed materials disappear some day"乧But I think that one's heart, a traveler's heart, and one's soul are eternal. I wonder what kind of views and emotions you have while listening this album? We have the word, "Kotodama" in Japanese, which means the sprit that is present in words. Instead this album includes something like the sprit which is present in sounds, not words. I deeply thank all of the people who joined in making this album, the Li-Hua Ensemble, all the players and staff, from my heart. Thank you |
